Ivy & Roses

February 2014

This piece was inspired by love. It represents lifelong connection and growth, the bonding of two souls, and nods to ideas of ancestry, lineage and fertility.

I made it using watercolours on layers of laser cut wood in order to give depth and added intricacy, allowing further detail to be found with every viewing.

To me it is about being rooted into your own history and honouring your ancestors as you explore your own future, whilst also grappling with the immutable forces that influence us all. It is an expression of what I want to manifest into my own life.

Bird of Paradise

January 2014

The Bird of Paradise (Strelitizia Reginae) is a much coveted flower of intense beauty, and a symbol of tropical wonder.

In this piece I try to capture the mystery and intrigue of flower, as well as the majesty of the leaves, which are instantly recognisable as being from the Zingiberales order.

The piece playfully features the plant as the subject matter where a more classical art nouveau work might feature a beautiful woman. It also sets this against various sacred geometric shapes, hinting at the divinity that this plant represents.

Monstera Deliciosa

July 2013

The first piece of layered artwork I created, this represented the launch of the Bobinsana project in earnest.

This piece was inspired by a) seeing how monsteras grew in the jungle, and how they were actually an enormous climbing plant that could take over a tree. They had this reputation as a cutesy houseplant, but actually in the wild they grew to be as large as a two story house.

It was also inspired by the fact that b) few people in the West who weren't botanists knew these things flower. Their fruit is delicious (hence the name), and their flowers are enormous in the way that jungle flowers can be.
