Bespoke and Custom Work

I absolutely love the challenge of taking on bespoke work, whether that be custom artwork, signage, jewellery - anything. This can also include reworking of existing work such as new colours or new objects.

Case Study - Mandala

Creating this frankly massive mandala for Mandala cafe was a fantastic challenge.

Firstly, it's the biggest piece I have made, and had to assembled in segments with a wooden frame holding it together. Secondly, it features more layers than anything else I have done - 15 in total. The structural considerations were a real headscratcher at points, but the finished item felt sturdy and rigid.

The colours were created with a particularly high pigment spray paint to give a beautiful matt finish. The real cherry on the cake was the use of bluetooth controlled LED strips which will certainly be appearing in future work I do.

Finally, one of the most challenging aspects was the lettering. It was hard to hide my signature overengineering and I had create custom height standoffs to set the name plate away from the mandala itself. This involved choosing positions behind letters so as to hide the construction and give a 'floating' appearance.

Adam, owner of Mandala, was extremely pleased with the result, and so am I.
